MOST COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

  • Where is Julia Creek?

Julia Creek is situated on the Overlander’s Way (Flinder's Highway) 650km west of Townsville and 250km east of Mount Isa.

  • How do I get there?
Fly - At this stage there will be 3 charter flights available from the following destinations:
Brisbane/ Townsville/Cairns. These will be confirmed in late January.
Other flights are available from the exsiting services from MACAIR AIRLINES and options into Mount Isa and drive.- Again these will all be updated in January.
 
Bus - There will be certain charter buses available. This will be updated in January.  Julia Creek is serviced daily by Greyhound buses from Townsville and Mt Isa.  You may also catch a bus from Brisbane directly to Kynuna, Cloncurry or Mt Isa.
 
Drive- The road is double-lane bitumen all the way along the Flinders Highway, and there are fuel stations at each town.  Julia Creek is also accessible from the north (Gulf region) via a sealed road, and from the south to via Kynuna (dirt road).  See enclosed map of the region & town.
 
Packages: There will be a Fly/ Drive Package on the existing services with Macair Airlines- Flights from Townsville to Mount Isa, Cairns to Mount Isa.
 
  • How do I enter the Triathlon?
Contact Margie Ryder on 07 4751 6607 or email madmaggies@bigpond.com and an entry form can be posted.  Registrations are accepted through the mail and an online registration system will be in place soon!
  • Merchandise?
Merchandise will be available to purchase across the weekend.  Unfortunately we do not have online ordering in place for this year's event.
  • Where is the Race Course (Turf Club)?
The Race course is not far from the centre of the town. Over the weekend there will be charter buses to take you over and back.
 
 
  • Are there EFTPOS facilities in Julia Creek?
Yes there are a variety of EFTPOS machines in the town, but for large sums we would suggest you bring some cash.
  • Will it be cold?
In the past years, yes during the nights and early mornings it does get cold and we would suggest you bring a jumper.
  • How hot does it get?
It can get up to the 40’s during the day, it is generally around 32-37 degrees.
  • Has the race had any famous names run in it in the past?
Yes we have had some of Australia’s best traithletes run in the event: The late Luke Harrop, Lorretta Harrop, Andrew Johns, Brad Beven.
  • What's the night life like?
There are 2 pubs and a Club which also offer after party entertainment for all age groups.
The Saturday Night is the highlight of the weekend - Bulls, Bands, Best Butts - We host the Australia's Best Butt Competition , which attracts many people of all sizes and shapes. The Bullride is of National standard. Riders are qualifying for points that count towards world finals.
 
In the past we have hosted greats bands such as: Troy Cassar Daley, Mental as Anything, Choir Boys, Slim Dusty Tribute, stay tuned for the entertainment announcement in January 2007.
 
  • What’s the water like to drink or do I bring my own?
A local will tell you it’s the best water on earth, but if you haven’t tasted bore water before, you might think that it does smell different- the taste is generally the same, but yes you can buy bottled water.
  • Where can we eat?
We have a local coffee shop, 2 grocery stores, shell servo in addition to the 2 hotels and a Club.
  • What else is there to see in Julia Creek?
Julia Creek has a unique history based on the Artesian water, historical walking trails, unique and endangered species- Julia Creek Dunnart – This information is available at the local tourism information centre., which is located in the centre of town or visit: www.mckinlay.qld.gov.au 
  • Accommodation?
For the 2007 event we are working towards a well organised Tent city, which will be equipped with electricity, beds, lights and cupboards. This information and photos is available under Accommodation. Motels and Hotel rooms will be made available in late December. In addition we have heaps of camping facilities.
 
  • Can I hire bikes?

Please note: You will need to arrange your own transport of the bike to, and return after, the event. Top Brand is unable to transport any more bikes.
